Education requirements

The education requirements are determined in the PEI Midwives Regulations. The Council of the College of Registered Nurses and Midwives PEI approves the relevant education programs.

A registered midwife practicing midwifery in the province of Prince Edward Island must have completed either:

  • a baccalaureate program in midwifery offered by an accredited postsecondary institution in Canada, approved by the Council, or
  • education or training the Council considers substantially equivalent to a baccalaureate program in midwifery offered by an accredited postsecondary institution in Canada

Additionally, each registered midwife must have completed:

  • a course on fetal health surveillance, approved by the Council; and
  • a course on prescribing and administering controlled drugs and substances, approved by the Council
